Following the success of Cat in the Wall (a favourite from CIFF2019), activist directors Mina Mileva and Vesela Kasakova return with a blistering drama focussed on Bulgaria’s treatment of women, both from the familial and the political point of view. Centring on two sisters (Ralitsa Stoyanova and Borat 2 breakout star Maria Bakalova), their mother and her twin siblings (director Kasakova and her own sisters), all dealing with their own struggles in the face of their patriarchal family elder and violent Bulgarian anti-gender protests, Women Do Cry is infused with tragedy, humour and, most of all, humanity.
