Red Mary Red was written and directed by visual artist Brían Crotty and stars Jon Whitty, Rosie O'Regan, Conor O'Riordan and Frank Prendergast. The film sets out to investigate the relationship between a fictionalised version of a real life 18th century highwayman William

Crotty and the general Irish population. Ideas of violence, justice, colonialism, class, poverty and

perception are raised through a negotiation between William Crotty and Peter Power, a simple

farmer who’s living has been put in jeopardy through the theft of his pig by ‘The

Redcoats’.

Peter Power must travel deep into the secluded Irish countryside, overcome prejudice and the weight of the class system in order to ask William Crotty to come to his aid.

William Crotty's recorded characterisation as both a ‘hero’ and a ‘villain’ has been utilised as a jumping off point for experimentation and exploration of Irish history.
